What are the Rim Materials?

Mar. 02, 2020

Wheel rims, also known as wheels, can be divided into three materials: steel, aluminum and carbon fiber. The following is an introduction by Aluminum Alloy Wheels Supplier.

1. Steel ring

Wheels made of steel are commonly used in commercial vehicles, trucks or some entry-level passenger cars. The advantages are low price, large disadvantages, and relatively common wheel styles.

2.Aluminum Alloy Wheels

Aluminum alloy wheels, as their name implies, are currently widely used in vehicles. Compared with traditional steel rims, it has the following advantages:

(1) Good heat dissipation: The heat transfer coefficient of aluminum alloy is three times larger than that of steel. During the running of the car, the friction between the tire and the ground, and the brake disc and the brake pads will generate high heat. This situation will cause the tires and brake pads to age and accelerate wear. The braking performance will be rapidly attenuated due to high temperatures. Tire pressure will also increase, there is a hidden danger of puncture. Aluminum alloy wheels can transfer this heat into the air faster than steel wheels, increasing the safety factor.

(2) Light weight: The proportion of aluminum alloy wheels is smaller than that of steel wheels. On average, each one is about two kilograms lighter than steel wheels of the same size. A total of eight kilograms can be reduced by removing spare wheels; lighter wheels can also Reduces resistance during start and acceleration, which work together to make the vehicle more fuel efficient.

(3) High precision: the precision of casting of aluminum alloy wheels is much higher than that of steel wheels, and the out-of-roundness and unbalanced weight are small; in addition, the elastic modulus of aluminum alloy is small, and the vibration resistance is better than that of steel wheels . These two items can effectively reduce vehicle vibration and make driving more comfortable.

(4) More beautiful: aluminum alloy has better fluidity and tension than steel rims under high temperature liquid state. Later polishing and electroplating process can make it more beautiful and changeable appearance; surface anti-corrosion treatment and electrostatic powder painting also makes it look like new.

Casting Aluminum Wheels

Casting Aluminum Wheels

There are two production processes for aluminum alloy wheels, one is casting and the other is forging.

(1) Casting Aluminum Wheels is divided into gravity manufacturing process and fork pressure (low pressure) manufacturing process:

Gravity manufacturing process: aluminum ingots are cast into aluminum rims and stamped from top to bottom in a rim model, one for three minutes. This process is suitable for supporting large-scale production for automobile manufacturers.

Fork pressure (low pressure) manufacturing process: the aluminum ingot is converted into aluminum water, which is directly extruded into the rim model through a transfer tube, and is lifted and pressed, one for 30 minutes. The wheels bought by the auto parts shop are all based on this process.

(2) Forging is a processing method in which forging machinery is used to apply pressure to metal blanks to cause plastic deformation to obtain forgings with certain mechanical properties, shapes and sizes. Forging can eliminate defects such as as-cast looseness caused by metal in the smelting process and optimize the microstructure. At the same time, the mechanical properties of the forging are generally better than those of the same material because the complete metal streamline is saved. For the important parts with high load and severe working conditions in related machinery, in addition to rolled plates, profiles or welded parts with simpler shapes, more forgings are used.

3.Carbon fiber wheels

Carbon fiber rims are characterized by lighter weight and higher strength, but the cost is high. This configuration is more common in super sports cars, and some modified car enthusiasts will also equip their cars.

The above are several common wheel materials.
